Major Projects

Cross Trip Scheme and Rehabilitation of 220kV KDA – Jamshoro circuits

To meet the increasing demand of metropolis, K-Electric alongside increasing its own generation capability also proposed to offtake additional power from National Grid up to 1100 MW. To ensure the reliability of the system post increased drawl from NTDC “Cross Trip Scheme” project was required to be initiate.

Alongside implementation of cross trip scheme, it was pivotal to rehabilitate 220kV KDA – Jamshoro circuits of NTDC to ensure additional power offtake. The rehabilitation project was jointly undertaken by NTDC and KE.

Both, the implementation of Cross Trip Scheme and Rehabilitation of 220kV KDA – Jamshoro circuits, were achieved well with in projected timeline that helped in managing the demand – supply situation efficiently.

New Interconnection Points with NTDC for Evacuation of Additional Power

KE, for benefitting consumers and economy at large has conceived projects of 500kV KKI and 220kV Dhabeji grid stations as additional interconnections with NTDC, considering the surplus supply scenario in National grid. With new interconnections KE will be able to import 2050 MW power from NTDC which will enable KE to manage the demand in upcoming years alongside enhancing system reliability. Both the projects are accelerating on fast pace which reflects KE’s promise for the betterment of Karachi.

Hub, Vinder, Uthal & Bela (HVUB) Project

KE has planned to bring a substantial change in the rural parts of its service territory by upgrading its infrastructure in these areas to meet the increasing load profile and to help economic expansion. In this respect, KE has planned to erect a new double circuit of 132kV transmission line from Hub-Chowki to Bela grid and enhancement of grids in Vinder, Uthal & Bela from 66 kV to 132 kV level. The project will be completed by September 2023 with cost of PKR 7,325 million.

In addition to the above, rehabilitation of existing 132kV and 66 kV transmission lines in this loop is also under execution. Phase 1 of the project has already been kicked off with 65% of scope executed so far. Meanwhile, in parallel the execution of phase 2 is expected to be initiated from September 2021.

TP-1000

To meet the growing load demand, project of over USD 450 million was conceived and by far, 6 new grid stations and 27 power transformers, along with rehabilitation of around 39.16 km and net addition of 47.94 km line length is attained. The state of the art “Disaster Recovery Centre (DRC)” facility is also commissioned under the canopy of this project which will serve as backup for KE load dispatch center thus providing redundancy for continuing the uninterrupted supply in case of any exigency.

GIS Overhauling Project

Capacity enhancement project is conceived for both HIS and GIS grid stations that is on course of its successful completion. By far, seventy-seven (77) bays have been completely retrofitted and the project is on course of its target achievement.

Grid Capacity Enhancement Projects

Capacity enhancement project is conceived for both HIS and GIS grid stations that are on course of their successful completion. The project encapsulates addition of 31.5/ 40MVA Power Transformers, 132kV GIS bays and allied MV switchgear at grid stations.

In addition to the above, the Company has also taken initiatives for replacement of obsolete current/ potential transformers, circuit breakers and relays and, rehabilitation of various EHT transmission lines, whereby conductors, insulators and associated hardware are replaced. Moreover, quarterly line insulator cleaning activities, annual preventive maintenance activities, thermography (predictive maintenance), RTV coating of insulators and installation of composite insulators helped improve the reliability of circuits near coastal belt by way of enhanced performance against humidity and pollutants and ensured smooth network operational capability.

Enhancement in SCADA systems and functionality is another systematic approach that has enabled to effectively trail and monitor the network remotely.
