Karachi, 20th August 2014: K-Electric, formerly KESC in its press statement said, that a site inspection was conducted by the KE team at the Godhra Muslim Welfare Hospital North Karachi, where electricity theft worth around PKR 17 million was caught on-site.
Giving details the press statement added that as per KE’s manager inspection, a three phase underground cable was confiscated after a successful raid conducted by the KE team. It was also learnt that this cable was illegally connected to an overhead cable through a sewerage pipe. The hospital had 2 meters installed inside the hospital premise through which electricity theft was being done causing losses of millions to K-Electric. KE’s team after calculating this incurred loss has given an IRB (Irregular Bill) to the hospital management which is worth almost PKR 17 million.
The press statement added that the discrepancy was removed by the KE team on site, but the electricity supply has still not been disconnected due to humanitarian grounds, as K-Electric does not want the patients inside the hospital to suffer because of ill-practices by the hospital management. The electricity supply was resumed through legal means and KE has given the President of the hospital, Mr. Yousaf, time to make the complete payment, and if such is not the case, K-Electric would be bound to disconnect the power supply to the hospital.
KE’s team has lodged an FIR (FIR # 51/14) against the President of the hospital Mr. Yousaf. KE’s team along with police officials visited the site later on after the President and administrator of the Hospital admitted that there was still more underground cable present, through which electricity theft was being done.
KE’s spokesman said, “This is quite shameful that hospitals who are there for a good cause are indulging in such activities. This not only makes it difficult for KE to function but a stern message should be sent out for all residential and commercial users who are involved in electricity theft”.
