Karachi 28th March, 2014: According to its press statement, K-Electric (KE), in line with its commitment to provide clean, reliable and affordable energy, has reaffirmed its commitment to climate change on the occasion of Earth Hour, a worldwide event organized by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
The press statement added that KE has been playing a proactive role in observing Earth Hour in collaboration with the Sindh Ministry of Environment and Alternative Energy and the WWF for the past four years. Through mass campaigns and distribution of knowledge-based materials, KE’s Energy Conservation Department encourages households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights and appliances for one hour – from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm – as a symbolic observance of the event.
KE plans to carry out the exercise at all its offices, installations and plants during the hour whereas the KE team will be present at the Sindh Assembly on the day to mark the global event.
KE has adopted a balanced and responsible policy towards energy conservation in its core business operations that reduce carbon emissions and ensure social and environmental gains. KE’s holistic approach aims at expanding its current generation portfolio by 15 percent through renewable energy and various energy efficiency initiatives over the next five years to mitigate climate change and reduce the carbon footprint.
Under its ongoing Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance policy, KE will continue to propagate and facilitate energy efficient lifestyles through consultation and advisory services as well as power factor improvement projects under its free energy audit service.
KE will also carry out programs aimed at encouraging usage of energy efficient appliances and adoption of efficient energy systems and building codes. It will create awareness for an energy efficient lifestyle specially targeted towards the youth. It will also share costs for conversion of street lights and landmark monuments to LED and solar lights in addition to the launching of an incentive program for commercial markets to adopt the Daylight Savings Program.
The Earth hour is a global event celebrated in more than 154 countries around the world. Millions of people join this global initiative for energy conservation and pledge to make a positive contribution to society. Everyone can join hands in this initiative and “put off” all extra lights in the office or home and show commitment and solidarity with the rest of the world.
KE asks the people to conserve energy throughout the year to achieve sustainable savings for reduction in the carbon footprint and for a better tomorrow.
